After A Week Out Of The Top Spot, Weapons Is Back On Top Of The Box Office
August has been the reign of
Based on recent reports, the critically-acclaimed horror movie has once again grossed over $10 million in ticket sales during its latest weekend, bringing its domestic total to a staggering $132.4 million. The film has been a powerhouse at the box office since its initial release, and it’s clear that it continues to dominate the big screen. Along with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, this success has made for an invigorating period for original horror stories. Fans of the genre are eagerly awaiting the potential influence it will have on the industry.
As a follower, I’m excited to share that with the recent influx of funds, our cinematic project has managed to surpass Peter Hastings’s “Dog Man” at the domestic box office by exceeding its $98 million earnings. By this time next Sunday, we expect to secure the 12th spot in the year’s biggest earners domestically if we can rally an additional $6 million. This would position us above Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein’s “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” which concluded its run this summer with a total of $138.1 million.

In previous articles, I’ve pointed out that the movie “Weapons” has been doing well at home compared to abroad. However, this week, it reached an impressive feat by surpassing $100 million in box office earnings from international markets. For those who struggle with basic arithmetic, this means its total worldwide box office collection now stands at approximately $232.4 million. Given that this film’s production budget was less than $40 million, this is a remarkable achievement indeed. While other films have earned more, there’s no denying that it ranks among the most profitable movies of 2025 thus far when considering profits.
By the end of this weekend, “Weapons” has become the seventeenth highest-grossing film of the year, outperforming Marc Webb’s “Snow White” at the eighteenth spot with a box office revenue of $205.7 million. Interestingly, it ranks third among the top original movies produced by Hollywood since January, trailing only behind “F1” ($613 million) and “Sinners” ($365.7 million).
Will the movie, following Zach Cregger’s ‘Barbarian’, receive any increase in viewership due to the Halloween season approaching? Starting from September, a period of around two months is traditionally when viewers lean towards watching horror films in cinemas. However, it remains uncertain if this film will see an uptick, perhaps due to the upcoming competition. Nonetheless, I’ll be monitoring the box office reports closely for next week to find out more.
Caught Stealing And The Roses Get Off To Mediocre Starts
The unexpected success of “Weapons” during late summer was further enhanced by the limited theater showings for “KPop Demon Hunters” a week ago. However, it’s essential to remember that August is typically not a favorable month for new releases. This trend has been evident in the box office performances of this weekend’s top wide releases, “Caught Stealing” and “The Roses.
Both the crime thriller starring Austin Butler and the comedy featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman haven’t been outright dismissed by audiences, as indicated by the “B” and “B+” ratings from audience members who completed CinemaScore surveys this weekend. However, they didn’t spark a surge in ticket sales either.
Among the two contenders under consideration, “Caught Stealing” showed the strongest performance, with earnings of $7.8 million and a second-place finish, trailing only the special reissue of Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws”. While it didn’t set any records, assuming there won’t be any downward adjustments in the upcoming days, it stands out as Darren Aronofsky’s highest opening weekend since “Noah” made $43.7 million back in 2014. Interestingly, it just barely surpassed the initial box office take of the contentious “mother!” when it was first released in 2017 ($7.5 million).
The re-imagined dark comedy film “The War of the Roses,” originally by Danny DeVito in 1989, could only reach fifth position at the box office this weekend. This places it below Nisha Ganatra’s “Freaky Friday,” which is currently on its fourth weekend. Despite boasting a star-studded cast including Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, and Zoë Chao, and generally positive reviews from critics, the movie earned just $6.4 million in ticket sales.
As a movie enthusiast counting down the days, I can’t wait for Michael Chaves’ “The Conjuring: Last Rites” hitting theatres this coming Friday! This marks the beginning of my much-anticipated spooky season, and I’m intrigued to witness its impact on the horror genre compared to previous films in the franchise. Be sure to revisit TopMob next Sunday for a detailed analysis of how this chilling addition fares at the box office!
