The Worst Netflix Movies of the Year

1. The Wrong Missy

Even Adam Sandler’s most dedicated fans will agree that not all of his movies are hits, and *The Wrong Missy* is one of the weaker ones. Sandler didn’t actually appear in the film – he just produced it through his production company, Happy Madison. Instead, the movie stars David Spade and Lauren Lapkus in a romantic comedy that doesn’t quite go as planned. The story revolves around a simple mistake: Spade’s character, Tim, accidentally texts the wrong Missy – a terrible blind date from the past – to join him on a romantic getaway. He meant to invite the ‘right’ Missy, his dream girl, but sent the message to the wrong person. And that pretty much sums up the entire movie – it’s light and doesn’t go much deeper than that.

2. A Fall From Grace

Tyler Perry’s *A Fall From Grace*, his first film for Netflix, is a thriller that unfortunately feels rushed and uneven. While it aims for suspense, it often comes across as unintentionally funny, due in part to noticeable production errors. Viewers can spot things like boom mics in the shots and extras looking directly at the camera. It’s hard to get invested in the story of a woman accused of murder when the dialogue includes oddly-timed, improvised lines like “Ashtray, bitch!”

3. Fatal Affair

With a title like *Fatal Affair*, you’d expect a thrilling movie similar to *Fatal Attraction*. Unfortunately, this film doesn’t quite measure up. Starring Nia Long and Omar Epps, it’s a predictable and somewhat messy story about love and betrayal. While it flirts with being enjoyably bad, it never quite reaches that level. The connection between Long and Epps is a bright spot, but strong chemistry isn’t enough to save a weak plot. It’s not terrible, but it’s unlikely to keep you gripped.

4. The Last Thing He Wanted

Dee Rees’ film, *The Last Thing He Wanted*, based on Joan Didion’s novel, had promise, but ultimately doesn’t deliver. Despite strong performances from Anne Hathaway, Ben Affleck, and Willem Dafoe, the movie struggles with a confusing plot. It follows a journalist who shifts from covering the 1984 election to helping her sick father by becoming involved in arms dealing in Central America, which leads her to uncover the Iran-Contra affair. The story is presented in such a complicated way that it’s hard for viewers to follow, and many critics found it disappointing.

5. Coffee & Kareem

The movie *Coffee & Kareem* struggles to find its footing. While it’s based on a kid’s idea, much of the humor is geared towards adults, which won’t appeal to younger viewers. The story follows 12-year-old Kareem, who tries to get rid of his mom’s new boyfriend, a police officer named James Coffee. His plan goes wrong, and his family gets caught up in a criminal underworld. Director Michael Dowse attempts to create a quirky buddy comedy, but the film doesn’t quite succeed.

6. Desperados

Netflix is hoping Desperados will be its next big romantic comedy, but it feels very similar to another one of their films, Ibiza: Love Drunk. The movie centers around three friends who go on a trip and experience a string of funny mishaps with men. Nasim Pedrad plays Wesley, who sends an embarrassing email to her boyfriend, only to discover he’s hospitalized in Mexico. To avoid humiliation, she convinces her friends to join her on a trip to delete the email. Unfortunately, the story is far-fetched and predictable. If you’re looking for a genuinely funny comedy with strong female leads, you’re better off watching Bridesmaids or Trainwreck – or just about anything else.

7. Spenser Confidential

This action movie stars Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke as friends, directed by Peter Berg. While Wahlberg and Duke have good chemistry, the movie itself is fairly predictable. The plot isn’t particularly engaging, and the action feels routine. It’s watchable, but don’t expect anything groundbreaking – unless you’re a fan of Boston scenery, which the film showcases well.

8. Hillbilly Elegy

Many predicted *Hillbilly Elegy* would finally win Amy Adams and Glenn Close their Oscars. Based on the bestselling memoir by J.D. Vance and directed by Ron Howard, it had all the ingredients for success. However, the film fell flat, feeling more like a TV movie filled with over-the-top drama and tired tropes. It follows a young man’s difficult return to his Kentucky roots before a crucial interview for Yale, but despite strong performances from the leads, it’s a slow and ultimately underwhelming experience.

9. The Kissing Booth 2

It turns out turning a popular online story into a movie series is harder than Netflix thought. The first *Kissing Booth* movie wasn’t just unfunny – it was downright silly. And the sequel somehow manages to be even more over-the-top. The film follows Elle (Joey King) and Noah (Jacob Elordi) as they navigate their first year apart – he’s at Harvard, and she’s a senior in high school. To earn money for college, Elle enters a Dance Dance Revolution competition with a $50,000 prize. She gets help – and a crush – on a new classmate, Marco. But that potential romance goes nowhere, as the movie remains focused on Elle and Noah’s relationship, which is strangely built on an unhealthy reliance on each other. Despite all this, the *Kissing Booth* movies are incredibly popular, and the third one is sure to be too.

10. The Last Days of American Crime

Critics widely panned *The Last Days of American Crime*, calling it one of the worst films ever made. It currently has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers criticized its overly serious tone and lack of originality. The movie follows two men and a woman attempting a major heist just as the government introduces a technology designed to stop crime. Don’t expect any surprises or meaningful character development. Its release timing – coinciding with the George Floyd protests and featuring scenes of police brutality – only worsened the film’s reception, making an already poorly-received movie even more problematic.
