La nueva película de terror Coyotes es más o menos lo que esperarías: una familia en Beverly Hills es atacada por coyotes salvajes y mortales, y deben luchar constantemente para mantenerse con vida.

Acabo de ver la película, y tiene Justin Long y Kate Bosworth en ella, ¡soy un gran admirador de ambos! Está dirigido por Colin Minihan, que es increíble. Estaba realmente interesado en saber cómo hicieron que los coyotes sean tan realistas y aterradores, así que revisé la entrevista con el elenco. Hablaron con Russ Milheim de Topmob en Fantástico Fest 2025, justo después del estreno, sobre cómo lo lograron. ¡Fue fascinante!

No es tan fácil jugar a la fantasía a veces.

  • TopMob: “La película obviamente se trata de coyotes asesinos. En el día, ¿de qué trabajaste frente a? Porque obviamente no estaban allí. Y luego, ¿cuál fue ese proceso de hacerlo creíble, auténtico y aterrador?”

Kate Bosworth : ¡Involucró principalmente a Colin diciendo repetidamente algo como, ‘Se acerca un coyote, se acerca un coyote!’ . Luego me dirigía, diciendo: ‘¡No, al otro lado!’ Eso fue más o menos el alcance de ello. No usamos ningún accesorio, como una pelota de tenis, ni nada similar. Era solo él llamando y gritando.

Justin Long : Entonces está la preocupación del actor por parecer tonto y sintiéndose inseguro de lo que estás haciendo. Ese miedo realmente impulsó la motivación del personaje. Seguí pensando: “¿Me pareceré ridículo?” Y en realidad había algunos títeres involucrados. Usamos títeres .

Estoy realmente ansioso por compartir este metraje. Muestra a Colin explicando cómo manejamos una escena de ataque de coyote con nuestro increíble primer subdirector, Philippe [en el último día de tiroteo]. Debido a que esta era una película de bajo presupuesto, no teníamos un titiritero dedicado. So Philippe, como el primer anuncio, realmente operaba esta marioneta de mano …

Estaba un poco cansada y, sinceramente, pensé que la actuación iba a ser un desastre. Pensé que simplemente sería involuntariamente divertido. Estaba luchando, sintiéndome agotado y consciente de que parecía falso y sobrevivido. Colin me envió el metraje. Este es el genio de Colin. ¿Lo editó y lo filmó así? Los cortes rápidos y la energía realmente lo hicieron funcionar, pero cuando ves las imágenes adicionales desde la distancia, parece absurdo. Es aterrador ver como actor.

Colin Minihan: It was really difficult to understand at first. During pre-production, I found out coyotes are very different from wolves. They’re naturally shy animals, so even getting one onto the set, let alone making it growl, was a huge challenge. Essentially, the trainer would have to betray the animal’s trust to make it do that, and obviously, no trainer would be willing to do that-nor did I want them to.

We created these creatures. We made several puppets – hand puppets, really, and they were incredibly detailed for the actors to work with. We also had a robotic puppet on set that the actors could physically fight. Then we used extensive computer-generated imagery (CGI) to complete the effect, and we even used real animals on set that looked like coyotes. It was great having the live animals there, though it definitely added a new level of complexity.

Mila Harris: Yeah, that really made me think. I wondered how I could act like there was a huge, scary coyote when there wasn’t one. But here’s a funny thing-we actually had giant, life-sized props, but they were confiscated at the airport because they looked so realistic.

We ultimately decided to use puppets. It was surprisingly effective, and I found myself actually talking *to* the puppet. It was a really interesting challenge, figuring out how to bring it to life. I imagined a real monster was there, and the paw felt genuinely real in my mind.

Brittany Allen: I’ve done quite a few horror movies, and it’s unusual to actually have the scary creature – whether it’s a monster, alien, or something else – physically present with you on set. Usually, that effect is added later in post-production. It really depends on the scene, but with this film, I often pictured something else that felt more frightening to me. And since we were filming in Colombia, I imagined we were surrounded by a group of powerful, dangerous people – okay, that might not sound right, but you work with what you’ve got to create the feeling you need.

Katherine McNamara: My experience was quite unique, as I didn’t share any scenes with the other actors in the movie. I was only on set for a single day. Luckily, I’ve known Colin for years, and Justin and Kate actually visited the set that evening. They all shared their insights and explained the overall feel of the film and where their characters were at during filming. I really enjoyed playing the character who dies early on. It allowed me to take some bold risks and hopefully make a memorable impression.
