I remember Blake James telling me about seeing this performer, and it was fascinating. Apparently, they’d shown him videos of the makeup process beforehand, just to really drive home the fact that it was all an illusion. He said even knowing that, when he saw it in person, it still felt incredibly unreal – almost like he was facing a fear. It was a complete experience, coming full circle from the videos to the real thing.

ScreenRant: Did he mess with you at all?

I first met him when we were down in the sewers, on this platform around a large pole. He tried to scare me by jumping at me, but it wasn’t funny at all. I really didn’t think it was humorous; it didn’t make me laugh even a little.

Arian Cartaya felt like Bill scared everyone when they were exploring the sewers. He suddenly started laughing in a really creepy way, imitating Pennywise’s voice. Arian glanced at Blake, and they were both genuinely frightened – absolutely terrified.

ScreenRant asked about people’s first impressions of him, and Sophia Lillis apparently said she wasn’t scared at all.

Matilda Lawler admitted that while she admired Sophia’s bravery, she was genuinely frightened by Pennywise. Seeing him in person was incredibly scary and unlike anything she’d experienced before – it really affected her physically. He’s a very imposing figure, and while the costume and makeup were frightening, it was the actor’s energy and ability to embody the character’s power that truly terrified her. She was, understandably, very scared.

Absolutely, Tilly, I totally understand. I was really scared too! They kept Bill Skarsgård’s involvement a secret, and we’d been watching the IT movies with my kids, even having screenings. The movies are classics, and getting into the Stephen King books is incredible – I’m about halfway through one, though they’re huge! It was so much fun experiencing it all, and keeping his involvement under wraps definitely made our reactions feel genuine and our fear more real. He’s fantastic as Pennywise. He’s a really lovely person when he’s not in character, but as Pennywise, with the costume and everything, he’s just amazing and really gets into the role.

I completely agree with both of you. Bill really embodies Pennywise, and he’s such a skilled actor that his performance genuinely frightened us. Everything – his hair, makeup, and costume – was really scary, and he’s so imposing physically! But honestly, the build-up to finally seeing him was so intense that we were all also completely captivated and excited. It was amazing to see him in person.

Bill Skarsgård hasn’t fully appeared as Pennywise yet in the series. The first episode of IT: Welcome to Derry focused on the frightening illusions he creates. While several characters died, and could have played larger roles, Pennywise’s clown form wasn’t directly responsible. That will change in future episodes.

It’s not shocking to see the actor who played Pennywise playfully scaring kids – he did similar things on the set of the 2017 movie It. The actors were genuinely frightened of him during filming, so it makes sense that fear showed up in their performances. We can probably expect some really great and authentic scary moments to be released soon.

With IT: Welcome to Derry expected to run for three seasons, Bill Skarsgård will likely have more chances to playfully frighten the young actors while dressed as Pennywise. It’s still unclear how much of this fun translates to the scary scenes he films with them, as there are seven episodes remaining.
