A surprisingly good dark fantasy movie starring Jack Black, which came out in 2024, is now getting a second chance to shine on streaming just in time for the holidays. While Black has been in several recent films with fantastical themes – like the worlds of Jumanji and The Minecraft Movie – this particular holiday release from last year is really special.
Released in November 2024, the Paramount+ movie Dear Santa is a darkly funny fantasy about a boy named Liam Turner (Robert Timothy Smith). When Liam writes a letter to Santa hoping his Christmas wishes will come true, he mistakenly sends it to Satan (Jack Black), who offers to grant him three wishes. Critics gave the movie a score of 24% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite some flaws, FlixPatrol shows that “Dear Santa” is currently the third most popular movie on Paramount+ globally, as of December 15, 2025. It didn’t reach the top spot in any single country, but it’s ranked number two in the UK and number four in Colombia, Guatemala, and Paraguay.
Even though critics didn’t like Dear Santa, it’s releasing at a good time – right before the holidays. Interestingly, its popularity on Paramount+ is happening just before a new Anaconda comedy movie hits theaters on Christmas Day. Despite the poor reviews, it’s actually a perfect seasonal watch.
This comedy centers around a child, Liam, who misspellings Santa’s name, and cleverly uses that to create a funny and heartwarming holiday story. Despite being rated PG-13, the movie’s popularity is likely boosted by Black’s experience appealing to younger audiences – as seen in films like A Minecraft Movie – and its festive Christmas theme.
Jack Black continues to delight audiences with his voice acting and comedic talent. He’ll soon be heard as Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and will reprise his role as Professor Shelly Oberon in the next Jumanji film. He consistently brings his unique brand of humor to a diverse range of movies.
Although many don’t consider Black‘s Dear Santa to be among his greatest films, its festive themes and the fact that it gained attention just before Anaconda premiered make it worth watching. Critics weren’t overly impressed, but the movie still has a charming quality that makes it a decent holiday pick.
