These works have helped bring the genre back into the spotlight decades after its beginnings in the 1980s.
Long before the recent surge in popularity, DC Comics explored the cyberpunk genre with Batman Beyond in 1999. This show was a continuation of Batman: The Animated Series, taking place in the year 2039, two decades after Bruce Wayne had stopped being Batman. In this future setting, Terry McGinnis becomes the new Batman, battling futuristic criminals and supervillains with guidance from the now-elderly Bruce Wayne.
While Batman Beyond is known as a superhero series, it’s also a great example of cyberpunk. The show takes place in Neo-Gotham, a futuristic city with towering buildings, bright neon lights, and a noticeable Japanese aesthetic – all common features of cyberpunk settings. It also perfectly captures the genre’s ‘high tech, low life’ vibe, with Terry McGinnis using advanced technology like his futuristic Batsuit, alongside elements like biker gangs riding motorcycles reminiscent of Tron.
As a huge animation fan, I’ve always appreciated how dark Batman Beyond got. It really leaned into a dystopian future, and the villain, Derek Powers – or Blight, as everyone feared him – was a perfect cyberpunk bad guy. He basically stole Bruce Wayne’s company, turning it into this massive corporation called Wayne-Powers, and used his wealth and power to make Neo-Gotham a truly awful place. It felt like Bruce was constantly fighting to stop the city from becoming completely controlled by technology and corporate greed.
Like many cyberpunk stories, Batman Beyond subtly criticizes the problems with unchecked capitalism and the power of large corporations. Derek Powers, a massively wealthy villain, is Terry McGinnis’s primary adversary. Powers’ schemes range from selling dangerous biological weapons to supporting radical scientists who threaten Neo-Gotham – and they’re all driven by his endless desire for more wealth.
While Powers is a major threat in Batman Beyond, Terry McGinnis faces many other villains. Neo-Gotham is full of crime, and Terry often battles criminals with advanced technology. One example is The Jokerz, a gang of clown-themed motorcycle riders who randomly attack and rob people. Another villain, Inque, uses her ability to change shape to spy on and disrupt competing businesses.
If you’re a fan of cyberpunk, Batman Beyond delivers everything you could ask for in a series. It features the dark, neon-filled cities reminiscent of Blade Runner, cutting-edge technology like in Neuromancer, thrilling action similar to Cyberpunk 2077, and thought-provoking social themes like those found in Akira. Plus, it boasts some of the best heroes and villains in the genre. With all three seasons available on HBO Max, it’s a perfect show to binge-watch.
Batman Beyond Has Aged Much Better Than Other Cyberpunk Shows
What truly makes Batman Beyond stand out—and remain relevant even now—is how well it has held up over time. Even after 27 years, it’s still considered one of the best cyberpunk shows ever created. Its art style, inspired by art deco, looks fantastic today, and it boasts the incredible voice work of Kevin Conroy, widely regarded as one of the greatest Batman performers. The series itself ran for three excellent seasons and was followed by two equally impressive films.
It’s unsettling how much of Batman Beyond‘s social commentary still rings true today, even though the show originally aired in 1999. Its themes – the dangers of powerful corporations, widespread corruption, attacks on community values, and technology that doesn’t necessarily make life better – feel just as impactful now as they did almost thirty years ago.
Look, Batman Beyond is a fantastic show, and what really sets it apart is how it stacks up against other cyberpunk series. We’ve seen so many come and go – Altered Carbon started strong but fizzled out quickly, and Krypton was just hitting its stride when it was canceled. Even the critically acclaimed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a limited run. But Batman Beyond? It wasn’t just good, it was consistently good for three full seasons, plus two movies. That kind of staying power is rare, and it’s what makes Batman Beyond a true standout in the genre.
Cyberpunk stories haven’t always translated well to television, but Batman Beyond is a clear exception. Even now, 27 years after it first aired, many fans consider it one of the greatest Batman shows ever made. What’s remarkable is that the show doesn’t even focus mainly on Bruce Wayne. Batman Beyond quickly established a fresh character and setting that were just as captivating as Bruce Wayne’s story, and it did so in a short amount of time.
