La Brea is a thrilling sci-fi series perfect for binge-watching. It follows a group of people who fall through a sinkhole in Los Angeles and find themselves in a dangerous, prehistoric world. The complete story is told across three seasons, even though the final season was shorter than planned. This Netflix show is a clever time-travel mystery that will transport you back to 10,000 BC.
La Brea Is a Bingeable High-Concept Sci-Fi Series
La Brea tells the story of a massive sinkhole appearing in modern-day Los Angeles, right next to the famous La Brea Tar Pits. The series follows the Harris family – including Eve and her son Josh – as they fall into the sinkhole and find themselves transported back to a prehistoric world from 10,000 BC.
Now, in the present, Eve’s separated husband, Gavin, and their daughter Izzy try to rescue their family members who have been affected, but they face opposition from the government.
Despite its strange premise, La Brea is still an enjoyable show. It’s similar to Lost, with plenty of action, especially in the first season. The story involves a second sinkhole opening up in Los Angeles, bringing prehistoric creatures like woolly mammoths and saber-toothed tigers into the modern world, causing chaos for everyone.
Melodrama and science fiction don’t often mix well, and La Brea could easily have fallen into that trap. Luckily, the show has a compelling story that keeps it on track. It’s surprisingly full of mystery and unexpected twists, especially in its first season. By the second season, the origins of the sinkhole are explained, revealing a surprising connection to a key character, and the plot continues to unfold from there.
Season 3 is packed with surprising twists and escalating danger, featuring creatures from throughout history—even dinosaurs! The season delivers plenty of exciting moments, culminating in a thrilling finale showdown between a fighter jet and a T. Rex, making it a really enjoyable watch.
The show also avoids becoming overly dramatic thanks to its excellent casting choices. It features a cast of relatable and likable characters who keep the audience invested in the story.
The show benefits from a strong supporting cast – including Chiké Okonkwo, Jon Seda, Josh McKenzie, and Nicholas Gonzalez – who all have well-developed storylines that help ground the show’s somewhat wild premise.
La Brea Is Better Suited for Netflix Streaming
Despite some complicated storylines that challenged viewers on NBC, the show might find a wider audience now that it’s on Netflix. The series demands attention with its prehistoric setting, and the multiple timelines and interwoven stories, combined with the week-to-week release format, likely made it hard for some to follow all of the creator’s unexpected plot twists.
La Brea works well as a show to binge-watch, letting viewers watch multiple episodes at once. Unlike shows that unfold slowly over weeks or months—where it’s easy to forget details—releasing all episodes at once on Netflix helps viewers stay engaged and remember key plot points as the story continues.
The confusing plot is probably why La Brea didn’t attract many viewers and received mostly negative reviews, scoring only 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. It had all the elements genre fans enjoy, like action, so its failure seems to stem solely from being hard to follow. The show demanded close attention to understand what was happening, which is difficult to achieve with regular network television.
I’m completely hooked on La Brea! It’s such a cool show – it mixes sci-fi, mystery, and a prehistoric survival story all in one. Honestly, it didn’t get enough attention when it first came out, but now that it’s on Netflix, everyone’s discovering how good it is. It’s unlike anything else I’ve seen, and it really pulls you in – the story flows so well, better than it ever got credit for, in my opinion. I’m definitely binge-watching!
If you’re a sci-fi fan or looking for a show to get into, or even if you’ve tried it before, La Brea is definitely worth checking out, especially with its revamped format.
