Hollow Warden Turns Rangers Into Crowd Control Tanks
The Hollow Warden class, as tested in playtests, gets extra advantages from the Hunter’s Mark spell – a core part of how the class works. Beyond the usual extra damage, Hollow Warden Rangers in D&D create a 10-foot aura called Unnerving Aura whenever they cast Hunter’s Mark. If an enemy begins their turn within this aura, they must make a Wisdom saving throw.
If your opponents miss an attack against you, they can only take one of two actions on their turn – a standard Action or a Bonus Action, not both. This is similar to the effect of the Slow spell. However, Hollow Warden Rangers can apply this penalty without expending any resources, as they get free uses of Hunter’s Mark through their Favored Enemy ability. While Unnerving Aura isn’t quite as powerful as the updated Slow spell – which has added effects and a longer range – it’s still a very strong ability for a character at level 3.
The Wrath of the Wild feature for the 2024 Ranger in Dungeons & Dragons adds extra armor to their defense, based on their Wisdom score. The Hollow Warden subclass encourages fighting up close. At 7th level, they gain Hungering Might, which gives them a bonus to saving throws based on their Wisdom. Plus, if they’re already injured (Bloodied), they can regain health by successfully hitting an enemy while using Wrath of the Wild to transform.
When Hollow Wardens reach level 11 and gain the Rot and Violence feat, they unlock powerful new abilities. Eerie Aura deals extra Necrotic, Poison, or Psychic damage to enemies who fail their save against Unnerving Aura – the amount of damage equals the Ranger’s level and bypasses any resistances. Additionally, Strangling Roots lets Rangers activate either the Sap or Slow weapon mastery property (from D&D) whenever they hit with a weapon, on top of any other properties that weapon already has.
Hollow Warden Rangers Are Absolute Beasts On The Field
The Hollow Warden Ranger is designed to be a durable character who excels at controlling the battlefield. They can potentially eliminate enemies who begin their turn within the Unnerving Aura, and also disrupt enemy actions. Hollow Wardens are naturally tough, and with the Ancient Endurance feat (available at level 14), they can regain a significant amount of health—five times the spell slot level—when reduced to 0 Hit Points by spending a spell slot of level 4 or higher. This feat also makes them immune to the effects of Exhaustion.
As a movie lover, I see the Hollow Warden Ranger as a really interesting twist on the usual archer-type character. It feels like they’re deliberately moving Rangers away from being strictly long-range fighters. Honestly, it almost feels like playing a Barbarian, but without the classic ‘rage’ ability! They’re built to be right up close, soaking up damage with boosted armor, and they have these abilities that really lock down and punish enemies. It’s a cool change of pace, letting you play a more frontline, tanky Ranger.
I don’t really enjoy playing Rangers with the current character choices, but I’m definitely interested in trying out the Hollow Warden. These character options and rules might change when the official Ravenloft: The Horrors Within book is released on June 16th for Dungeons & Dragons.
