Instead of truly exploring the characters’ destructive passions – imagining them even going so far as to desecrate each other’s graves – it played it safe, giving audiences what they anticipated. In contrast, Saltburn doesn’t shy away from explicit content, even when depicting unfulfilled desire. As a result, the truly visceral and unsettling Wuthering Heights adaptation isn’t the classic, but Emerald Fennell’s 2023 film.
Saltburn Was a Better Adaptation of Wuthering Heights
Whether this film is a good adaptation will likely always be a topic of discussion, and that was intentional. It was always the director’s unique take on the book, even if many experts disagree with it. If a truly faithful adaptation were to be made, Saltburn would probably be a better example than the follow-up film.
While the specific plot of the movie Saltburn isn’t the same as the novel it’s based on—which deals with abuse and racism on the English moors—the central relationships between the characters are still present. Interestingly, Jacob Elordi plays a role similar to Catherine Earnshaw, while Barry Keoghan’s character echoes Heathcliff. Like Heathcliff in the original story, Oliver is brought into a wealthy household and quickly becomes infatuated with the popular, privileged heir.
Similar to how Heathcliff pursues Isabella, his adopted sister-in-law, in Wuthering Heights, Oliver has an affair with Felix’s sister. However, while Wuthering Heights centers around the iconic Wuthering Heights house, Saltburn largely takes place at the grander, more contemporary Thrushcross Grange. This shift in location is a key difference in Emerald Fennell’s reimagining of the classic story, making Saltburn a gothic tale of secrets unfolding within a lavish home rather than the brooding, isolated farmhouse of the original novel.
The movie Saltburn is visually vibrant, contrasting with the dark and unsettling tone of Wuthering Heights. A key scene in Saltburn—Oliver’s disrespectful act at Felix’s grave—strongly echoes Heathcliff’s desperate attempt to bring Cathy back from the dead, even going so far as to exhume her body. This connection makes Saltburn feel more aligned with the spirit of Wuthering Heights, particularly in its overall style. While Saltburn explores the characters’ inner darkness, the versions of Cathy and Heathcliff in Fennell’s film are less intense and complex than they are in the original novel.
While Wuthering Heights didn’t fully explore what drove its characters to be truly awful – they just came across as mean-spirited – the new film Saltburn at least took big swings, even if you didn’t like the result. The film wasn’t aiming to be a faithful adaptation, but it could have been bolder. Instead, it played it safe and lacked any real passion. Saltburn, for better or worse, was willing to take risks.
