10. El hueco
In the world of The Vampire Diaries, Rayna Cruz and The Hollow are two of the most powerful enemies ever faced by the heroes. Both are relentless in their pursuit to eliminate their targets – Rayna hunts any vampire who’s been marked, while The Hollow is focused on destroying the ancient Lebonair family (the Originals) and anyone who threatens her control. Both characters have compelling origins, and The Hollow’s story is even tied to the very beginning of werewolves.
The Hollow is ultimately more powerful than Rayna because she’s completely ruthless and can control people in much more dangerous ways. Rayna relies on typical manipulation tactics and using people she knows, like Caroline, to get to Stefan. But The Hollow can control minds naturally, use supernatural powers to influence others, and even possess bodies, allowing her to be anywhere and anyone. This makes her incredibly difficult to defeat. Plus, unlike Rayna, she has no problem harming or killing children or innocent people.
9. Elijah Mikaelson
Elijah Mikaelson is a compelling character who plays a villain in both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, but he’s far more sympathetic in the spinoff. While still a Mikaelson, he often seems genuinely motivated by doing what’s right. He excels in both versions of the role, and stands out from typical villains. Elijah presents a civilized exterior – he’s calm, well-spoken, and always impeccably dressed – and prefers manipulation to outright violence.
Despite being incredibly powerful and intelligent – far beyond a typical vampire – his loyalty to family knows no bounds. He truly embodies the ‘always and forever’ mentality, even if it means making difficult choices like betraying Elena or helping his dangerous brother. However, he doesn’t quite rank as high on the villain list because throughout the series, he often acts as a flawed hero rather than a pure villain.
8. Silas
While Katherine Pierce may be the more compelling villain as a doppelganger, Silas is definitely one of the best villains in the series. This immortal—who’d likely be offended to be called a vampire—is incredibly confident and witty, making him a lot of fun to watch. He has Stefan’s charisma without all the angst and self-loathing, and he’s also completely ruthless, viewing everyone around him as insignificant. That makes him a truly dangerous opponent.
Silas possesses incredibly powerful psychic abilities. He can control people’s minds, change his appearance to look like anyone, and even cause physical pain without touching them. He’s strong enough to deceive even the most powerful witches, like Qetsiyah and Bonnie, and completely incapacitate Klaus, the Original hybrid, making him believe he’s on the verge of death.
7. The Trinity
Each member of the Trinity could easily be considered one of the best villains. Aurora is the most sympathetic but also holds the biggest grudges. Tristan excels at manipulation and makes you really dislike him. Lucien is the most strategic and arguably the most powerful. However, if only one could be chosen, it would be Lucien. His transformation into an Enhanced Original Vampire and his significant role in the events of The Originals make him the most impactful villain.
Despite their differences, this trio is stronger as a unit, which is why they deserve a place on this list. They constantly change roles – one acts as the villain, another seeks revenge, and the third tries to be a friend. This dynamic keeps things interesting, and they also have the powerful Strix at their command, even if the group believes they’re simply following Tristan’s lead.
6. The Necromancer
Legacies often focuses on individual monsters each week, which means it struggles to create lasting, compelling villains. Malivore, a creature made of mud, is particularly weak – he lacks both a clear purpose and a compelling personality, making him a remarkably uninteresting antagonist. While Clarke is a decent villain, she doesn’t quite reach the standard set by the antagonists in The Originals and The Vampire Diaries. The Necromancer, however, is the only villain in Legacies who truly measures up to that level.
Though the Necromancer often appears as a somewhat silly villain seeking attention, he’s actually incredibly intelligent and capable. He uses Malivore to create an army of mindless monsters, and his unassuming nature is what makes him truly dangerous – he can easily manipulate clever characters like Hope and Dark Josie. Of course, he also has the power to resurrect people and completely control them. However, when compared to other major villains in The Vampire Diaries universe, he’s still fairly average in terms of both power and how far he’s willing to go.
5. Esther & Finn Mikaelson
As a long-time fan of these shows, I have to say Esther Mikaelson is one of the most compelling villains ever. She’s a truly awful mother, and honestly, it’s infuriating how she creates all this chaos with the Originals, then pretends to be surprised when they embrace their darker sides. She’s completely ruthless – willing to kill her own children in The Originals and even take over other people’s bodies in Legacies. And it’s always Finn who ends up enabling her, which is a recurring and frustrating pattern across both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals.
Finn is a relatable villain when you consider his story – he probably wouldn’t be considered a major threat on his own. Being trapped for nearly 900 years gives him a legitimate reason to resent Niklaus and those who helped create the hybrid. However, his mother expertly controls him, exploiting both his anger towards his siblings and his devotion to her. Together, Finn and his mother are powerful enemies, ranking among the most persistent and dangerous opponents, much like Katherine.
4. Aunt Dahlia
Aunt Dahlia stands out as the most compelling villain in The Originals, and arguably one of the best across the entire Vampire Diaries universe. Her magical abilities are remarkably powerful, comparable to those of witches like Bonnie or Qetsiyah. The show’s storytelling builds her up as a genuine threat long before she actually appears on screen.
Driven by a desperate deal from the past, Dahlia kidnaps her niece and threatens her sister’s family. She claims she’s protecting the child, Freya, but is actually stealing her magical powers to maintain her youth and immortality. What makes Dahlia particularly dangerous is her ability to frighten even the powerful Mikaelson family, including their formidable mother, Esther – she understands their weaknesses in a way that only a relative could.
3. Klaus Mikaelson
Klaus Mikaelson stands out as the most formidable villain in The Vampire Diaries, largely due to his insatiable thirst for blood, which makes him incredibly dangerous. Even before discovering his full potential as a hybrid, he’s a cunning and threatening character, and afterward, he’s simply terrifying. What I find compelling about Klaus is his honesty – he never tries to portray himself as someone he isn’t, a refreshing contrast to many other characters on the show.
Joseph Morgan’s captivating performance as Klaus makes it easy to overlook his villainous actions. This is largely why viewers hope for his character to find redemption and enjoy his romantic pairing with Caroline Forbes. However, Klaus isn’t quite among the very best characters because he’s often unbeatable, and he feels less compelling when surrounded by his family, preventing him from ranking in the top two.
2. Katherine Pierce
Katherine Pierce is often considered one of the best villains in The Vampire Diaries, and for good reason. She’s incredibly skilled at getting what she wants – she’s clever, charming, and knows how to manipulate people. Over centuries, she’s managed to stay one step ahead of even the most powerful enemies. She isn’t afraid to lie or cheat to achieve her goals, and she delivers memorable, witty lines. Most importantly, she’s unpredictable; you never quite know what she’ll do next, which makes her a truly captivating character.
Despite her power, she ultimately ranks second because her motivations are deeply personal and her threats are limited to a specific group. She’s driven by revenge against those who harmed her, particularly the tomb vampires, and harbors intense hatred for Elena. Even after gaining immense power as the Queen of Hell, her primary goal remains the destruction of Mystic Falls.
1. Kai Parker
When it comes to the best villain in The Vampire Diaries, the main contenders were always Klaus, Katherine, and Kai. All three were powerful, ruthless, and incredibly determined to survive. However, Kai stands out as the most compelling villain because his cruelty and lack of conscience existed long before he became a global threat. Even before being trapped in a different dimension, he was willing to kill his own family, and he continued that violent behavior immediately upon his return.
He lacks any moral compass and doesn’t improve even after experiencing Luke’s feelings. Even when fully himself, he’s capable of horrific acts, like planning genocide during his own sister’s wedding. He schemes on a massive, destructive scale, and is quick to kill anyone who annoys him. Unlike Klaus, he has no meaningful relationships to keep him in check, making Kai Parker the ultimate villain in The Vampire Diaries.
