The 2010s were a fantastic decade for science fiction movies. From grand space adventures and mind-bending thrillers to a huge wave of superhero films, there was something for every sci-fi fan to enjoy.
Many science fiction movies came out during that decade, but only a handful have become truly iconic and are still considered classics today.
2010’s Inception Is a Mind-Bending Masterpiece
Christopher Nolan is a hugely important and well-known director today. While many consider The Dark Knight (2008) his best film, his work throughout the 2010s is arguably even more impressive. He began the decade with Inception, a complex and visually stunning movie about dreams, incredible action, and groundbreaking special effects.
Even now, Inception is considered a defining movie of the 2010s. It’s become so culturally significant that it’s hard to imagine another 2010 science fiction film surpassing it. The movie features a fantastic cast, and its action scenes and the worlds it creates are truly exceptional.
2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes Remains a Near-Perfect Sequel
Released in 2011, Rise of the Planet of the Apes launched a hugely popular sci-fi series and introduced the world to Caesar, a character brilliantly brought to life by Andy Serkis. Despite seeming like a risky idea, the film was a surprising and complete success.
Every moment of the film feels worthwhile, and its deep look at what it means to be human, the nature of intelligence, and the big questions about life itself is truly impressive. Though future installments would build on its success, Rise of the Planet of the Apes remains a key science fiction film from the 2010s.
2012’s Dredd Is an Action-Packed Romp
The 2012 film Dredd is a seriously underrated sci-fi action movie. It’s a brutally violent and exciting masterpiece that centers on Judge Dredd as he battles criminals inside a massive building.
While 2012 brought us great sci-fi films like The Avengers, Looper, and Prometheus, Dredd stands out for its straightforward and impactful storytelling. It’s a beautifully made movie that didn’t do well in theaters initially, but has since gained a dedicated and passionate following as a cult favorite.
2013’s Her Explores A.I. Unlike Ever Before
Spike Jonze’s film Her stands out from typical sci-fi movies. It’s a gentle, deeply moving drama, and many consider it one of the best in the genre for years. Joaquin Phoenix plays a solitary man in a seemingly perfect future, and the film portrays his experience with a touching blend of complexity, sweetness, and melancholy.
Her is a truly exceptional film that stays with you long after the credits roll. It’s funny, deeply moving, and visually stunning, earning all the praise it receives from science fiction fans. At its heart, it’s a story about adapting to change, the importance of human connection, and the difficulty of saying goodbye – a true cinematic masterpiece.
2014’s Interstellar Sends Viewers on a Space-Faring Odyssey
Following the huge success of Inception, Christopher Nolan revisited science fiction with Interstellar, a groundbreaking space film. Visually stunning and deeply moving, Interstellar is a remarkable film that stands out as one of the best sci-fi releases of 2014.
Despite some excellent films like Guardians of the Galaxy, The Lego Movie, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes coming out in 2014, Interstellar still stands out as the best. It’s a truly important film of the decade, not only for science fiction fans, but for all movie lovers. Interstellar is a grand achievement and will likely be considered a classic sci-fi film for many years to come.
2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road Goes Big in the Best Way
Director George Miller surprised audiences in 2015 by revisiting the world of Mad Max with Fury Road. After focusing on animated family films like Happy Feet and Happy Feet Two, his return to high-octane sci-fi action with Fury Road was a thrilling and unexpected comeback.
Many consider Mad Max: Fury Road to be a modern action masterpiece, and it’s definitely among the greatest science fiction films ever made. With its frightening, desolate landscapes, relentless speed, and unbelievably spectacular action sequences, Mad Max: Fury Road is a must-see movie.
2016’s Arrival Is the Perfect Mix of Emotion and Spectacle
Over the past ten years, Denis Villeneuve has become a leading director in science fiction cinema. His recent films, including both Dune and Dune: Part Two, have been hugely popular with both viewers and critics. However, he first gained recognition in the genre with one of his earlier works,
Arrival is a beautifully made and intelligent science fiction film about a linguist tasked with communicating with aliens who have landed on Earth. It’s a captivating story that explores themes of language, time, and human connection, and it’s one that stays with you long after the credits roll.
2017’s Blade Runner: 2049 Does the Legacy Sequel Right
It’s remarkable how well Blade Runner: 2049 succeeds, considering it’s a sequel to one of the most beloved science fiction films ever made. Directed again by Denis Villeneuve, it’s a worthy successor to the original 1982 classic, matching its quality in impressive fashion. The original Blade Runner remains a sci-fi essential, and this sequel lives up to its legacy.
Blade Runner 2049 centers on a police officer who discovers unsettling truths about his own identity, the history of the world, and the enigmatic Rick Deckard. The film both honors the original Blade Runner and expands its universe in exciting ways. By revisiting and emphasizing the complex questions posed in Ridley Scott’s 1982 film, Blade Runner 2049 firmly establishes itself as a landmark science fiction achievement.
2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Broke New Ground
Released in 2018, the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one of the most visually stunning comic book movies ever created. It revolutionized how people view animation, superhero films, and science fiction stories. While its incredible visuals are truly captivating, they’re not the only reason Into the Spider-Verse is so well-regarded.
With fantastic characters, thought-provoking themes, and truly stunning action sequences, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a film everyone will enjoy. It’s unlike anything else out there and has set a new high bar for modern animated movies.
2019’s Ad Astra Is One of Brad Pitt’s Best
Similar to the film Interstellar, James Gray’s Ad Astra is a deeply emotional and impressive science fiction story about a hero’s journey into the vast, mysterious universe. However, Ad Astra received a more divided reaction from critics and audiences when it first came out. The film’s trailers and marketing materials led many to expect a fast-paced, action-filled movie, which didn’t quite match the actual experience.
I have to say, Ad Astra is a stunningly beautiful and surprisingly subtle film. Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones both deliver absolutely phenomenal performances. The visuals are truly breathtaking, and honestly, it feels like a must-see for any sci-fi fan. It’s a shame it’s faded from memory a bit since its release, because I genuinely believe Ad Astra was not only the best sci-fi movie of 2019, but ranks among the very best the genre has offered in the last quarter-century.
