4. Zeb Orrelios
Zeb Orrelios is a familiar face to Star Wars fans, unlike Colonel Ward who is new to The Mandalorian and Grogu. We first met Zeb in the animated series Star Wars Rebels, set during a dark period in the galaxy, and he recently made his live-action debut in The Mandalorian. He quickly became a fan favorite in Rebels, known for his humor and eventually revealed as a kind-hearted character, despite his sometimes prickly relationship with Ezra Bridger and tough exterior.
Despite appearing in several trailers for The Mandalorian & Grogu, Zeb didn’t have a major part in the show. While he provided valuable assistance to Din Djarin and Grogu during his scenes, his appearances were infrequent and somewhat scattered. Even so, Zeb remained a delightful, humorous, and predictably mischievous character, just as fans remembered from Rebels, making him a standout character in the show.
3. The Anzellans
One of the biggest surprises in The Mandalorian and Grogu is how genuinely funny the Anzellans are. While they’ve been part of the Star Wars universe for a while, providing some humor, they really shined in this series, almost outshining even Grogu. Beyond just the way they talk, their unexpected and hilarious lines – like calling Grogu a “bad baby” – were a real highlight.
The Anzellans are more than just comedic relief. They were crucial in helping Din Djarin escape the Twins during their first encounter, and they stepped in to save both Din and Grogu when they were in danger again. It’s likely the pair wouldn’t have made it without their help, proving they’re true heroes. While incredibly popular, the Anzellans nearly surpassed Grogu as the best characters, but ultimately Grogu remained the fan favorite.
2. Din Djarin
Din Djarin, one of the main characters in The Mandalorian and already a fan favorite in the Star Wars universe, almost overshadowed Grogu at times. The movie really highlighted Din’s impressive combat abilities and his strong, fatherly instincts toward Grogu. There were several heartwarming moments showing Din caring for Grogu – like buckling him into the ship and limiting his cookie intake before dinner – which were truly sweet.
Beyond the heartwarming scenes, Din Djarin truly stands out as a compelling character. He consistently defeats his enemies, whether by using his flamethrower, destroying massive AT-ATs in spectacular fashion, or relying on his skills in hand-to-hand combat – he never gives up, even when facing incredibly dangerous threats (like the terrifying Dragonsnake). Din also remains deeply selfless, particularly when it comes to protecting Grogu.
The show also benefits from Pedro Pascal’s performance as Din Djarin. Despite the Mandalorian code forbidding him from showing his face, The Mandalorian and Grogu cleverly includes scenes where we do see his face without creating plot issues later on. Pascal’s presence almost overshadowed Grogu, but surprisingly, another character managed to steal the spotlight even more.
1. Rotta
Okay, let me tell you, the biggest surprise in The Mandalorian and Grogu for me was definitely Rotta the Hutt, Jabba’s son. He really gave Grogu a challenge! But it turns out this wasn’t Rotta’s first time in the Star Wars universe. I remembered seeing him way back in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie, and he even popped up again briefly in the Clone Wars TV series. Back then, though, he was just a little baby Huttlet!
Rotta had grown significantly in The Mandalorian and Grogu. He appeared surprisingly muscular, which took some getting used to, and still had a somewhat comical appearance. However, Rotta quickly became a standout character. He was humorous, brave, endearing, and remarkably well-developed – a level of depth rarely seen in Hutt characters in either television or film.
Rotta almost became more popular than Grogu in The Mandalorian and Grogu, and even though he didn’t quite surpass Grogu, that’s still a big accomplishment. It suggests Rotta could appear in future stories.
