The next Batman movie will likely continue a trend of bringing multiple DC villains together, building on what happened in the first film. Although DC movies often reuse characters, it’s unusual to see several villains team up in a single film, especially outside of animated movies that frequently showcase a hero’s entire group of enemies.
This is especially true for superhero movies with real actors. They usually center on one main villain, giving them enough screen time and allowing the story to wrap up that villain’s arc before moving on to the next threat in the next movie.
This approach has made the new Batman series particularly engaging. Both the first movie and the Penguin spin-off show have taken inspiration from The Dark Knight by introducing a variety of Batman’s enemies right away. The Batman 2 appears to be continuing this trend, and is shaping up to include a well-known team-up of villains, a common occurrence in DC’s live-action films.
The Batman 2 Is Primed To Be The 3rd Time We’ve Seen One Villain Crossover Since The Dark Knight
Considering The Batman and its 2027 sequel are the first films focusing solely on Batman since The Dark Knight trilogy, it’s remarkable that the new sequel will bring back a villain who has appeared in live-action films three times in under 20 years.
With both the Joker and Two-Face expected to appear in The Batman 2 – hinted at by the first film’s ending and reports of Sebastian Stan being cast as Two-Face – this will be the third time these two villains have shared a live-action DC movie in roughly 18 years. They previously appeared together in The Dark Knight and the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux, alongside The Batman 2.
This pairing wouldn’t be so remarkable if DC had made many live-action Gotham-based films recently. However, since that’s not the case, it’s significant that these two villains appear in nearly half of the Batman-related DC movies released since The Dark Knight, highlighting just how important they are to the franchise.
Why The Joker & Two-Face Are Such Popular Figures For DC Movies
The Joker and Two-Face are often paired as villains in movies because they represent opposite extremes of wrongdoing. The Joker thrives on pure chaos, while Two-Face, despite being a criminal, believes he’s enforcing a twisted sense of justice by letting a coin flip decide his actions. This contrast makes them a compelling duo for filmmakers.
This also explains how the Joker and Two-Face test Batman. Although the Joker is often Batman’s greatest enemy, Two-Face is one of the most emotionally challenging, because of Bruce Wayne’s personal connection to and sympathy for his former friend, Harvey Dent.
It’s important to remember that Two-Face and the Joker are already two of DC’s most well-known and beloved characters. Because of this, it’s not surprising that filmmakers often try to include them in movies when it fits the story. So, it wouldn’t be unusual if both characters have important roles in The Batman 2, depending on how the plot develops.
