However, Criminal isn’t a show that really highlights or celebrates humor in its characters. While there’s often a dark, comedic edge to things – similar to some of the grittier parts of Tulsa King – it’s not a primary focus.
Garrett Hedlund addressed the upcoming comic adaptation more directly as he continued, saying:
I’m really looking forward to working on ‘Criminal.’ It’s great to be collaborating with Dee Rees again – we previously worked together on ‘Mudbound.’ And of course, I’m thrilled to be working with my friend, Charlie Hunnam.
What makes the show Criminal so promising is that Ed Brubaker, one of its creators, was also in charge of production. With Sean Phillips, also a creator, as an executive producer, the show is likely to be exactly as they envisioned it. Fans are thrilled to hear Brubaker seems to be a great leader for this project.
For people who haven’t read the comic, the impressive cast is likely to be the main attraction. It features Garrett Hedlund and Charlie Hunnam, who previously starred together as tough brothers in the 2019 Netflix action movie Triple Frontier.
In the series Criminal, Hunnam stars as Leo Patterson, an experienced thief who prefers to plan elaborate heists without using any guns or violence – a different approach than his father, Tommy. While Leo doesn’t always succeed, he always tries. The character doesn’t seem to have any siblings, so Hedlund likely won’t play a brother, but I’m hoping the two actors will share scenes together in the new show.
Viewers can likely expect to see him appear towards the end of the first season, specifically in episodes 5 through 8, which were all directed by Dee Rees, who also directed Hedlund’s film Mudbound. The show also boasts a fantastic cast, including Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison, Luke Evans, Emilia Clarke, Adria Arjona, Logan Browning, Pat Healy, John Hawkes, Michael Mando, Chris Diamantopoulos, Marvin Jones III, and many others.
