The movie Project Hail Mary, based on Andy Weir’s popular 2021 science fiction novel, is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for their work on the Spider-Verse films. But the film’s portrayal of the alien Rocky differs from how Weir described him in the book, so let’s compare the two versions of this friendly extraterrestrial.

Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary really gets going when Ryland Grace (played by Gosling) wakes up on the spaceship Hail Mary after being unconscious for thirteen years. Slowly, as his memory returns, Grace realizes he used to be a middle school molecular biology teacher and discovers his fellow crew members didn’t survive the journey.

When Grace detects an alien spaceship heading his way, he unexpectedly finds a friend and partner to assist with Project Hail Mary – a risky undertaking to prevent the suns of both their worlds from dying. This alien, who comes from the planet Erid orbiting the star 40 Eridani, is intelligent and Grace nicknames him Rocky because of his rough, rocky exterior.

The character Rocky in the popular film Project Hail Mary was brought to life through impressive puppetry, rather than extensive computer-generated imagery. Puppeteer James Ortiz and the special effects team crafted Rocky using practical effects, making him look remarkably like the character described in the book. From his size and grayish-brown color to his unique stone-like face, shell, five limbs, and spider-like movements, Rocky is incredibly faithful to the novel’s depiction.

While the book focuses on Rocky’s tough, unpolished appearance, the film portrays the creature with more emotional depth through its lifelike movements.

The design started as a detailed physical sculpture, which was then digitally processed, scanned, and 3D printed before being carefully layered with fiberglass to create the final form.

Different versions of Rocky were created for each scene, and the visual effects team at Framestore was brought in to create its more difficult movements, like swinging from one limb to another during the Hail Mary sequence. By skillfully combining real-world effects with computer-generated imagery, the filmmakers brought Weir’s description of Rocky to life in a remarkably realistic way.
