I’ve always been fascinated by Gotham and its characters, but we’ve mostly seen it all through Batman’s eyes – Bruce Wayne’s perspective. What’s really exciting about the new film is that it’s breaking away from that. It’s going to add a whole new layer of creativity to the Batman universe, something we haven’t really seen before. This next movie, coming out in 2026, is going to be a really different take – a body horror story, actually! It follows Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harries, and his life completely changes after an accident leaves his face… well, it turns into something like clay, and things spiral from there.
Clayface is the first of what will likely be many Batman-related projects within the new DC Universe. It’s a preview of Gotham City and its characters, coming out before the upcoming Batman movie, The Brave and the Bold. There’s speculation about a possible Batman appearance, but nothing has been confirmed. If Batman doesn’t make a cameo, Clayface will have his own full movie before Batman even appears in the DCU.
DC Studios is making a big change. For years, Batman has been the focus of almost everything they’ve done. Now, they’re expanding to include more characters from the comics, beyond just Bruce Wayne. If this new film does well, it could open the door for more movies focusing on Batman’s villains, allowing fans to learn more about them.
Batman Has Always Been the Centerpiece of Gotham City
DC Comics has often focused its attention on Batman and the Joker, sometimes overshadowing other characters. The 1989 film Batman launched a successful era for the character in movies, and he’s remained popular for over thirty years. Whether through new films, TV shows, or video games, Batman has consistently been the main focus of DC’s stories.
For a long time, DC Studios primarily focused on Batman. The 2019 film Joker changed that, proving that standalone villain-focused movies could be both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. Although the 2024 sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, didn’t perform as well, the idea of spinoffs continued, with some projects finding success. One example is a planned series based on Colin Farrell’s Penguin character from The Batman, designed to appeal to audiences even without Batman’s presence.
With films like Joker and The Penguin, DC is opening up exciting new possibilities for stories set in Gotham City and the characters they choose to highlight. It wasn’t long ago that a movie centered around a villain like Clayface would have seemed like a risky idea. Now, people are eagerly anticipating what could be a truly original superhero film.
What really makes this DC film worthwhile is its fresh take on Clayface. Unlike many other superhero stories, this one tries something genuinely new, offering a unique approach not often seen in the genre. It’s a welcome change of pace from the constant stream of Batman adaptations and provides a refreshing break amidst a crowded year of superhero movies.
Though it doesn’t arrive until October, the movie Clayface is already generating excitement. A strong teaser trailer and positive reactions from horror fans suggest it could be a hit, even without Batman appearing. This success could encourage DC Studios to create more standalone stories, developing Gotham City’s characters in a way no other franchise has.
The DCU’s Historic Batman Shift Is Refreshing and Beneficial for Worldbuilding
The new DC Universe is taking a different, and surprisingly welcome, path with Batman. For over thirty years, since the iconic 1989 film, Batman has been the star of DC’s movies, cartoons, and games. While we’ve seen a lot of Batman, his rich world of allies, villains, and sidekicks often get less attention, as the focus tends to remain squarely on the hero himself.
James Gunn and the team behind the DC Universe are building Batman’s world by first showcasing a variety of characters, starting with some lesser-known faces. Now, villains like Clayface will get their own stories before Batman officially appears. This approach is designed to create a rich and detailed version of Gotham City, setting the stage for the introduction of DC’s famous hero.
Batman is destined to become central to DCU stories set in Gotham City. For now, James Gunn and his team are cleverly building a fresh version of Gotham, allowing them to carefully plan the character of their Batman. By the time Batman appears, many of his key allies and enemies will already be established, creating a richer world for him to inhabit.
Despite the upcoming new Batman, DC Studios seems committed to its current plans. The movie The Brave and the Bold will center on Bruce Wayne’s relationship with his son, Damian Wayne, and will expand the “Bat-Family” with characters like Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Barbara Gordon, and Tim Drake. Many of these characters will be making their live-action debut.
For years, DC Comics has revisited the same stories with Batman and Gotham City. Now, DC Studios is taking a fresh approach, offering a new perspective on these well-known characters. Bruce Wayne will still be important, but the stories won’t solely focus on him, which is a welcome change.
Clayface hits theaters on October 23, 2026.
