The Best Movies of 2025

20. Caught Stealing
Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing was a delightful surprise among the year’s films. Released late in August – typically a dumping ground for bad movies – it’s a really enjoyable and gritty thriller that perfectly captures the feel of old New York City. The story feels reminiscent of After Hours, and it’s full of unexpected turns. What stood out most was the nostalgia: seeing Shea Stadium, the old Kim’s Video store, or even just the fact that a major studio made a smart, adult drama like Caught Stealing.

19. Eephus
The title Eephus is perfect for this gentle, seemingly simple film. Much like the eephus pitch itself, the movie subtly draws you in, and just when you think you’ve figured it out, it takes an unexpected turn. (In fact, other names for that pitch – like blooper ball or parachute – would also fit the movie well.)
Eephus centers on the last game played by two small-town amateur baseball teams before their field is demolished. Over the course of nine innings, co-writer and director Carson Lund delves into the connections between teammates and opponents, using this ultimately unimportant game to examine why baseball’s traditions and rituals are so meaningful to so many people.

18. It Was Just an Accident
After a couple of films exploring similar themes, Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident continues a trend of movies about men seeking revenge on those they believe have wronged them – even when the accused claim innocence. The film follows a former Iranian prisoner, Vahid Mobasseri, who encounters a man he believes tortured him during his unjust imprisonment, Ebrahim Azizi. Though he never saw his torturer’s face, he recognizes the voice and the sound of a prosthetic leg. Unsure of what to do, he enlists other victims of torture to help identify the man and decide what to do with him. The film is both heartbreaking and surprisingly funny, and it carries particular weight because Panahi himself has been imprisoned multiple times – he was recently sentenced to another year in prison by the Iranian government for making this very film.

17. Bugonia
Yorgos Lanthimos is known for his darkly comedic films, and his latest, Bugonia, continues that tradition. It’s a twisted update of the 2003 South Korean movie Save the Green Planet!, reflecting our current obsession with conspiracy theories. The film centers on a reclusive and unsettlingly relatable man, played by Jesse Plemons, who kidnaps a powerful pharmaceutical CEO (Emma Stone—her fourth bold collaboration with Lanthimos). Plemons’ character accuses Stone’s of being part of an alien scheme to destroy the world, and she’s naturally baffled and angry. It’s a hilariously unsettling situation, and the film’s blend of humor, fear, and tension perfectly captures the anxieties of modern life.

16. The Perfect Neighbor
This gripping Netflix documentary uses police bodycam footage to tell the shocking story of a deadly escalation between a Florida woman and her neighbors. The Perfect Neighbor details the disturbing events leading up to a killing and its devastating consequences, prompting viewers to question whether the legal system always protects those who deserve it. Though it’s a true crime documentary, it’s also intensely frightening – and could easily be considered the scariest movie of 2025.

15. Reflection in a Dead Diamond
As a huge fan of classic spy films, I was completely blown away by Reflection in a Dead Diamond. It’s a visually stunning movie – seriously, every shot feels like it’s in motion, packed with retro style. Directors Forzani and Cattet have created a total pastiche of Eurospy and giallo films, and they cram so many incredible images into 87 minutes it feels like you’re watching a whole season of movies. The film centers on an aging secret agent, brilliantly played by Fabio Testi, who’s slowly losing it. What makes it even more unique is one of the villains can hypnotize people into movies, and honestly, the film itself is so obsessed with that vintage exploitation cinema vibe, it puts you under a spell. I didn’t want it to end!

14. Mickey 17
Bong Joon-ho loves to subvert expectations, especially when it comes to popular actors known for heroic roles. After portraying Captain America in a shocking way, he’s now turned to Robert Pattinson, best known as Batman, in his new film, Mickey 17.
In the movie, Pattinson plays Mickey, a man with multiple copies of himself. Thanks to futuristic technology, Mickey works as a disposable operative, completing dangerous missions crucial for space colonization. Each time he dies on a mission, a new body is created, and he’s currently on his 17th iteration. However, a glitch creates an 18th Mickey, leading to complications.
While Mickey 17 might not be as consistently strong as Bong’s acclaimed Parasite, that inconsistency could be intentional. With 18 nearly identical characters, it makes sense that the film itself would have some shifts in mood and tone.

13. Friendship
The play Friendship was a remarkably engaging theatrical experience in 2025, drawing audible reactions – sighs, gasps, and even shouts of disbelief – from the audience throughout the comedy. These reactions were earned; the story centers on Tim Robinson’s increasingly awkward and painful experiences after a new friendship with a seemingly cool neighbor (Paul Rudd) falls apart during a terrible get-together. Robinson brilliantly portrays a character completely unaware of how embarrassing things are becoming, while Rudd perfectly embodies the cool and collected friend. The script, written by director Andrew DeYoung, delves so deeply into male insecurities that it might literally cause some viewers to cringe so hard they experience muscle spasms.

12. Black Bag
I wasn’t expecting Black Bag to be such a steamy, suspenseful mystery in the style of Agatha Christie, but I quickly realized it was exactly my kind of movie. The film stars Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett as a married couple who both happen to be spies. Their happiness is disrupted when Fassbender is tasked with investigating his wife, suspecting she might be working against them. Beyond the fantastic supporting cast – including Regé-Jean Page, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, and Pierce Brosnan – the movie’s biggest draw is its unpredictability. Every scene keeps you guessing, which is a refreshing and enjoyable experience.

11. Superman
Many dedicated comic book fans would never compare a DC film to Richard Donner’s Superman, but James Gunn’s Superman actually surpasses it in some ways. Nicholas Hoult delivers a fantastic performance as Lex Luthor, portraying him as both incredibly self-centered and easily offended. The supporting cast is also excellent, with Edi Gathegi as the aptly named Mr. Terrific and Krypto, Superman’s mischievous and scene-stealing superdog.
The movie features a wonderfully endearing Superman, played with charm by David Corenswet, making him easy to root for. It’s a fun, thrilling, and romantic film that even manages to include some thoughtful social commentary. This sets a high bar for future DC movies, which is exciting because it’s intended to be the first installment in a whole new series of superhero films.

10. Train Dreams
Each year, there should be an award for the best Netflix film that really doesn’t feel right for the platform. And the first winner is Train Dreams. (Yes, I watched it on Netflix!) It’s a slow, beautiful, and heartbreaking film that follows the decades-long life of Robert Grainier, a solitary logger, played with quiet power by Joel Edgerton. Director Clint Bentley uses Grainier’s story to show how the Pacific Northwest changed over time – his travels, work, relationships, and family life with Gladys (Felicity Jones). Train Dreams isn’t something you can casually watch while scrolling on your phone. You need to dim the lights, put distractions away, and fully immerse yourself in another era.

9. Predator: Badlands
The latest Predator film feels like a Terminator 2 remake – though it doesn’t quite reach that same level of grandeur. This time, the Predator isn’t a mysterious, unstoppable villain, but a surprisingly relatable hero. A young, outcast Predator is banished to a dangerous planet and must prove himself by defeating a seemingly invincible creature (which shares some similarities with the T-1000).
Along the way, he teams up with several funny companions, including Elle Fanning as an optimistic android. Despite this lighter tone, the movie still delivers the intense action and brutality fans expect from the Predator series. Director Dan Trachtenberg has created his best film yet with dynamic visuals, exciting action sequences, clever gadgets, and a story that explores themes of family and honor.

8. Weapons
If Zach Cregger asks you to come down to his basement, seriously, just leave! He clearly has a thing for dark, creepy spaces, and his new movie, Weapons, is no exception. Beneath the quiet surface of a Pennsylvania town lurks a truly unsettling location, and it’s the backdrop for a strange mystery: seventeen children vanish from one elementary school class. The film follows several characters – the teacher (Julia Garner), a father of one of the missing kids (Josh Brolin), and a troubled police officer (Alden Ehrenreich) – as they try to unravel what happened. Weapons jumps between different perspectives, creating a tone that’s both deeply disturbing and surprisingly funny. It’s like a darkly comedic Pulp Fiction – a mix we didn’t know we wanted, but absolutely get.

7. Avatar: Fire and Ash
You know, of all the Avatar movies, Avatar: Fire and Ash really hits home for me. It’s not just the visuals – though, honestly, after all these years, the 3D and high frame rate are still stunning and the world just looks incredible. But it’s more than that. Seeing these characters – Jake, Neytiri, even Quaritch – after so much time, and finally getting real emotional closure on storylines that have been building for almost twenty years… it’s powerful. Maybe it’s also because I’m a dad now, and I’m a total sucker for any movie about fathers doing everything they can to shield their kids from a messed-up world. Whatever it is, I loved it, and I’m already counting down the days until Avatar 4. Bring it on!

6. The Naked Gun
If you need a good laugh, the 2025 film The Naked Gun delivers! It’s 85 minutes of hilarious gags, silly wordplay, and over-the-top humor, offering a fantastic update to the classic franchise. Liam Neeson steps into the role of Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s famous bumbling detective. He’s just as clumsy and determined as his father, tasked with solving a case involving a scheming businessman (Danny Huston). Throughout his investigation around Los Angeles, Drebin shares a ridiculously funny inner monologue, including a memorable observation about his love interest, Pamela Anderson, and her impressive figure. The Naked Gun proves that spoof comedies – and comedies made for theaters – still have a lot to offer.

5. Predators
The demand for easily-made documentaries about well-known subjects has led to a constant stream of films trying to explain past pop culture phenomena – everything from Pee-wee Herman to MoviePass has been covered recently. While these documentaries aren’t necessarily bad, Predators stands out because of director David Osit’s personal connection to its subject: the Dateline NBC segment “To Catch a Predator.” The show aimed to protect children, but turning a public service into entertainment had unintended consequences that neither the show nor its audience fully considered.
Instead of a broad overview, Osit focuses on specific cases, interviewing people involved in the show – including the actors who played decoys, an expert who studied its methods, and even those who now replicate it online. Osit himself rarely appears on camera, but his quiet, thoughtful questioning contrasts sharply with the confrontational style of reporter Chris Hansen. He clearly takes the subject matter seriously and openly admits his own conflicted feelings about a show he used to watch. In a time when empathy seems scarce, films like Predators – films that encourage us to truly consider difficult topics – are more important than ever.

4. Marty Supreme
If you found the Safdie brothers’ Uncut Gems a bit too relaxed, their new film, Marty Supreme, is definitely for you. It’s the story of Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet), a talented but reckless table tennis player and hustler who believes he’s destined for greatness. Unfortunately, his overconfidence constantly lands him in trouble, and the movie plays out like a never-ending chase – Marty has to constantly move forward to avoid disaster. The film is darkly funny, features fantastic performances from a diverse cast including Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin O’Leary (Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank), and is incredibly suspenseful. It’s so good, you’ll find yourself hoping it becomes a huge box office hit.

3. No Other Choice
Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice is immediately enjoyable – it’s both hilarious and gripping. It feels like a film Alfred Hitchcock would have loved, perhaps even more than Star Trek: Section 31. But the movie offers much more than just entertainment. It’s filled with clever visual jokes and repeating themes, particularly images of plants and trees, all connected to the story of a dedicated paper mill worker (played intensely by Lee Byung-hun) who loses his job and struggles to find new work. While the story is based on a Donald Westlake novel, the choice of the paper industry feels particularly relevant today. In an era where technology threatens so many jobs, a paper worker perfectly embodies the fight to survive as older ways of life disappear.

2. Sinners
Is Sinners the year’s best vampire film? Or is it a deeply thoughtful look at America, music, cultural appropriation, and the stories we create about artistic genius? The answer is both—Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is also genuinely frightening, alluring, and surprisingly humorous. It’s an ambitious film, and it almost completely succeeds.

1. One Battle After Another
“One Battle After Another” is a rare find in today’s Hollywood, where movies based on existing properties dominate. It’s a big, ambitious film – costing around $150 million to make – with a clear vision from director Paul Thomas Anderson and layers of political meaning. The movie defies easy categorization, blending elements of a tense thriller, a quirky adventure, and a socially conscious drama – the kind of films studios used to excel at. At its heart, it’s a touching story about a father trying to shield his teenage daughter from his past and a world in chaos. It’s funny, visually stunning, odd, unsettling, and thrilling – essentially, a new masterpiece from Paul Thomas Anderson.
