A ÉL
Professor Utonium
The Powerpuff Girls (1998-2005); The Powerpuff Girls (2016-2019)
I’ve always loved The Powerpuff Girls, and for me, Professor Utonium is just as important as Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup! He’s the one who really makes the whole story work. He just wanted a family so badly, and he used his genius to create one. Sure, the Chemical X accident was unexpected, but it gave him the superpowered daughters he always dreamed of, and honestly, it’s heartwarming!
Tom Kane perfectly embodies the all-American, fatherly figure of Utonium, radiating pride and a touch of endearing quirkiness. Even when frustrated, he feels instantly forgiving or ready to impart wisdom. Kane brings a unique personality to Utonium, making his story arcs truly captivating to watch.
Lord Monkey Fist
Kim Possible (2002-2007)
Though it doesn’t always come up in conversations about the best cartoons from the 2000s, Kim Possible was very popular during its run and remains well-known today. Memorable characters – like Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable – definitely contributed to its success, as did compelling villains such as Lord Monty Fiske, voiced by Tom Kane.
Lord Monty Fiske is a wealthy archaeologist and a top researcher of primates. But when he gains magical abilities linked to money, he transforms into Lord Monkey Fist – a powerful, hairy fighter obsessed with finding even more ancient artifacts. Actor Kane skillfully voices both the composed Monty Fiske and the wilder, more energetic Monkey Fist, creating a compelling contrast.
Yoda
Star Wars: Clone Wars (2003-2005); Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2014, 2020)
Tom Kane is well-known for his voice work in Star Wars: Clone Wars, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and other Star Wars projects. He’s one of a select few actors—along with Frank Oz, John Lithgow, and Tony Pope—who have portrayed the older version of the Jedi character.
Oz is unmatched as the voice of Yoda, but Kane comes very close. In fact, for many fans, Kane was their first introduction to the character. He brilliantly combines Yoda’s playful nature from the original Star Wars films with the more serious tone from the prequels, creating a truly unforgettable performance.
Mr. Herriman
Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends (2004-2009)
In the world of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, imaginary friends are real beings. When kids outgrow them, these friends go to a special home while waiting for a new child to imagine them. The show centers around Mac, an eight-year-old boy who has to leave his imaginary friend, Bloo, at Foster’s Home.
Rather than abandon Bloo, Mac pledges to come see him each day. This leads to him befriending the other imaginary friends at Bloo’s house, like Mr. Herriman, who is voiced by Tom Kane. Mr. Herriman is a large rabbit distinguished by a monocle and top hat, and he’s very particular about following the rules – a role that perfectly suits Tom Kane’s sophisticated and slightly offended vocal style.
Admiral Wullf Yularen
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2014, 2020); Star Wars Rebels (2017)
Admiral Wullf Yularen appears throughout the Star Wars saga, initially as a minor character in Star Wars: A New Hope. Like many Star Wars figures, his backstory has been expanded over time. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, he’s portrayed as a member of the Republic, fighting for the side we generally consider the heroes.
Admiral Yularen is a highly disciplined and effective officer who always follows the proper procedures and respects authority, even when he doesn’t see eye-to-eye with Anakin Skywalker. Tom Kane’s strong and commanding voice instantly conveys that Yularen is a force to be reckoned with, but also someone who might keep secrets.
Magneto
Wolverine And The X-Men (2008-2009)
Tom Kane voiced Magneto in the animated series Wolverine and the X-Men, which was the fourth attempt to bring the X-Men to television. The show begins with Wolverine trying to bring the X-Men back together after their mansion is destroyed. This new team then faces off against Magneto and other enemies from the series.
Magneto is attempting to unite mutants, but it becomes clear he has hidden, potentially harmful goals. This portrayal of Magneto is reminiscent of Ian McKellen’s version, though with some fresh, unique elements. The actor’s performance is rough and conveys a sense of superiority, fitting well with the character’s arrogant storyline.
Narrator
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2014, 2020)
Each episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars starts with a narrator quickly summarizing the last episode and previewing the next one. It’s similar to the text crawl at the beginning of a Star Wars movie, and it’s a great way to kick things off.
Tom Kane provides the narration for these episodes, delivering the story like a classic news reporter announcing breaking events. His voice is ideal for creating a continuing, adventurous feel reminiscent of the Flash Gordon serials.
Narrator
Walt Disney World Monorail System (2012-Present)
If you’ve visited Walt Disney World, you’ve likely heard the voice of Tom Kane, even if you didn’t know it. He’s been the voice of the Walt Disney World Monorail since 2012 (according to WDWMagic). He also narrated the popular nighttime show, Happily Ever After, at Magic Kingdom from 2017 until 2023.
Tom Kane took over as the voice of the monorail after Joe Hursh, who held the role from 2004 to 2012 (according to the Orlando Sentinel). While his delivery is a little quieter than characters like Yoda or HIM, it’s still clearly Tom Kane. It’s reassuring to know that even though Tom Kane has passed away, we can still enjoy his voice through his work on TV and during magical experiences like riding the monorail.
