The connection between Max and Lucas has been hinted at since the third season of the show, and it began to grow more significant in season four as they both got older. However, when Max falls into a coma due to Vecna, their relationship faces major challenges, and it seems like much of the next season will involve them being separated in different worlds.
Max ultimately breaks free from Vecna’s control and recovers from her coma. However, her relationship with Lucas doesn’t fully heal until Vecna is defeated in the final episode of Stranger Things. In the show’s closing scenes, she’s back to skateboarding and happily playing Dungeons & Dragons with Lucas.
While most of the series is set in the 1980s, the final episode jumps forward in time to the 1990s. Because the movie Ghost was released in July 1990, the show’s creators were able to include it without changing the show’s timeline.
Interestingly, Ghost was a huge commercial success, earning over $505 million around the world, proving it was widely seen in cinemas. Including a scene of the characters watching it wouldn’t be new for the show – the Duffer brothers famously featured a scene of them watching Back to the Future (1985) in season 3.
Look, if you’re really invested in Max and Lucas having a big storyline going forward, prepare to be a little let down. The Duffer Brothers have pretty much confirmed this is where we leave the original group of kids. Now, they will be appearing in a new animated spin-off called Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, set between seasons two and three, but here’s the catch: they won’t be played by the same actors we’ve come to know and love. It’s a different take on the characters, and a bit of a farewell to that core cast as we know them.
The Duffer Brothers recently shared a small detail about Max and Lucas’s date in the Stranger Things finale. It doesn’t change the scene itself, but it’s a nice little addition that gives their long-awaited date a bit more meaning.
