Instead of making all episodes available at once, Disney+ will release Percy Jackson & The Olympians one episode each week, starting with the first two on December 10th. As a longtime fan of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books, I went in with high hopes, and thankfully, the first two episodes mostly deliver. They’re engaging enough to grab your attention and make you want to see what happens next.

The Main Trio Are As Convincing As Ever

It was easy to expect great things from the three young leads, especially since this was the first season. Walker Scobell, Leah Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri immediately deliver, proving they’re as fantastic as anticipated.

The characters have definitely grown since we last saw them, but thankfully, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover still feel like the people we know and love. The strong connection between Percy and Grover is just as heartwarming in the TV series as it was in the books.

The actors Scoball and Jeffries have great chemistry, which makes it especially impactful even though their characters are currently being driven apart by the plot. Whenever Annabeth has to hurt or deceive Percy, it feels incredibly difficult for her, and Jeffries deserves praise for portraying those painful moments so convincingly.

Season 2 of Percy Jackson & The Olympians does deviate from the beginning of The Sea of Monsters book. However, these changes actually help the story get back to Camp Half-Blood more quickly and smoothly. Surprisingly, the removed scenes aren’t really missed, making the alterations effective.

I was really impressed with how they handled Tyson. He felt much more intelligent and less like a simple explanation than in the book. And I loved that they hinted at danger at the camp without needing a huge battle – it was much more subtle and effective. Using the chariot race to kick off the quest felt like a brilliant move, since it was already established in the story. Honestly, I didn’t even mind that they revealed Luke poisoned Thalia’s tree earlier. It always seemed pretty clear he was the one responsible, so it fit naturally when they showed it happening.

Aside from the changes involving the cannibals—and I was okay with most of them except for removing the cannibal dodgeball—my biggest concern was how forced the relationship between Percy and Annabeth felt. About three months before the show came out, it was announced that they would be including the Great Prophecy storyline in season two of Percy Jackson.

Timothy Simons and Lin-Manuel Miranda deliver standout performances as Tantalus and Hermes, and are particularly deserving of praise in the first two episodes of Percy Jackson & The Olympians season 2.

Lin-Manuel Miranda delivered what many consider the best performance of his career. His character, Hermes, initially appears carefree and silly, but this quickly changes. The shift is abrupt, yet powerfully effective. When asking Percy to rescue Luke, Miranda brought genuine emotion to the line, emphasizing the deep connection between them as father and son.

Percy Jackson Season 2 Still Has A Few Issues To Fix

The creators also need to decide how they’ll approach the storyline about the Great Prophecy and make sure it feels relevant to the overall narrative. Currently, it doesn’t quite fit.

Despite a few small issues, the second season of Percy Jackson & The Olympians is starting off very well. There’s already a lot to enjoy, and if the show continues to follow the plot of Rick Riordan’s The Sea of Monsters, I’m confident this season will be even better than the first.
