As a huge fan of atmospheric storytelling, I think the show could really nail the dual-world concept. The Duffer Brothers proved with Stranger Things they’re great at building creepy, believable alternate realities. And honestly, the ‘territories’ in The Talisman being more old-school medieval actually helps – it means they wouldn’t need a ton of CGI, making it easier for the audience to buy into it. Sure, the quick switches between worlds might get a little disorienting at times, but I don’t think it’s anything they couldn’t handle. It’s totally achievable.
Unlike Stranger Things, the creators of a potential Talisman adaptation would have the complete novels to work from. Also, the main character, Jack Sawyer, grows up throughout the story – he starts as a 12-year-old in The Talisman, then ages in Black House, and becomes an adult in the upcoming Other Worlds Than These. Adapting two seasons per book would give the series a clear start and finish.
The Cancellation of The Talisman Is a Bigger Issue for Netflix Than the Duffer Brothers
Netflix definitely lost out when The Talisman was cancelled. The creators of Stranger Things have a lot of power and can get projects approved at any streaming service. While they’ll likely find success elsewhere, passing up a popular Stephen King adaptation with the potential to become as big as Stranger Things or Game of Thrones is a risky decision, even with the Duffers involved.
The recent move of Mike Flanagan from Netflix to Amazon Prime Video is a significant loss for the streaming giant. Flanagan has been instrumental in establishing Netflix as a leader in horror television with acclaimed series like The Fall of the House of Usher and The Haunting of Hill House. He’s also become a key director for Stephen King adaptations, having directed films like Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, and The Life of Chuck, with another project slated for release later this year.
The competition is especially fierce in dark fantasy and horror, particularly now that Mike Flanagan has secured the rights to adapt a series he’s passionate about and intends to do well. Netflix could have capitalized on the recent success of Stephen King adaptations by having its established directors lead the projects.
The Duffer Brothers stepped away from The Talisman project, saying they weren’t sure how to bring the story to life on screen. However, the plot is a fairly straightforward fantasy adventure – the different realms aren’t much more complicated than the Upside Down in Stranger Things, especially considering how well the latter was explained in the final season. It’s likely Netflix was also hesitant to invest a large amount of money upfront, which would have been necessary to properly adapt The Talisman. Nevertheless, future projects will undoubtedly demonstrate that Stephen King’s stories are worth the investment.
