Kevin Bacon will play Earl, a working-class veteran trying to rebuild his relationship with his daughter in Craw County, Alabama. The story also centers on his daughter, a fellow veteran who searches for her father and stumbles upon a dangerous criminal operation led by a highly successful high school football coach. Further details about the cast haven’t been released yet.
Kevin Bacon Returns to the Small Screen
Kevin Bacon recently starred in and directed a horror comedy film, and the movie also featured his family – his wife, Kyra Sedgwick, and their children, Sosie and Travis Bacon. Last year, he also appeared in two TV series: The Bondsman on Prime Video and Sirens on Netflix. Though he’s best known for his work in movies, Bacon has also had significant roles in television shows like City on a Hill and The Following.
I’m so excited about the pilot for Southern Bastards! Reinaldo Marcus Green, the director of King Richard and an upcoming Marvel project for Disney+, is at the helm, which already gives me a lot of confidence. It’s based on the fantastic graphic novel by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, and the script is by Bill Dubuque, known for Ozark, with a story he developed alongside Nia DaCosta, who’s directing The Marvels. It’s a really talented team bringing this story to life!
I’m so excited to see this project come together! It’s fantastic that experienced leaders like Green and Dubuque are involved as executive producers, alongside the talented Matt Olmstead, Aaron, and Latour. Plus, having Layne Eskridge from POV Entertainment on board as an EP is a great sign. And I’m a huge fan of everything Proximity Media does, so I’m thrilled Ryan Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler are also executive producing. Simone Harris and Kate Barry are co-executive producing too, which just rounds out an incredible team!
Southern Bastards Gets an Adaptation
The comic book series originally ran for 21 issues, from 2014 to 2018, and received widespread praise. It won several awards, including Best New Series at the 2015 Harvey Awards and Best Continuing Series and Best Writer (for Aaron) at the Eisner Awards. Review scores on Comic Book Roundup average a remarkable 9 out of 10.
Hulu has been working on a pilot for several months, ever since initially commissioning the project. At that time, Bill Dubuque was announced as a member of the creative team. Dubuque is well-known as the co-creator of the popular Netflix series Ozark, which makes him a good fit for this project, as Southern Bastards has a similar feel. He’s also been working on the upcoming Peacock series M.I.A., scheduled to premiere in May, and contributed to the films A Family Man, The Accountant, and its sequel.
Currently, Hulu hasn’t officially greenlit Southern Bastards for a series, and there’s no confirmed release date.
