Donnie Darko (2001)
Netflix isn’t the best place to find truly unique or classic cult films – mostly you’ll find newer, lower-quality Netflix originals. However, a few gems are available, like Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko. This film, starring a young Jake Gyllenhaal, tells the story of a teenager who avoids a tragic accident and realizes he might be the key to preventing a global catastrophe. With its haunting visuals, dark mood, and unforgettable ending, Donnie Darko is considered one of the best independent films of the early 2000s.

The Squid and the Whale (2005)
Noah Baumbach really established himself as a talented filmmaker with a deeply personal movie about a young man (played by Jesse Eisenberg, who also benefited from the film’s success) navigating his parents’ divorce. The movie received many award nominations and launched Baumbach into a new, successful period of his career, which continues with films like the Netflix hits Marriage Story and Jay Kelly.

Zodiac (2007)
David Fincher is known for his films about serial killers, but Zodiac is more than just a crime thriller. It’s a journey through San Francisco’s history, seen through the perspectives of three men obsessed with solving the Zodiac Killer case. We follow a dedicated police inspector (Mark Ruffalo), inspired by the character in Bullitt, a determined newspaper reporter (Robert Downey Jr.) who became a target himself, and an amateur detective (Jake Gyllenhaal) unable to move on, even after the killings stop. What makes Zodiac truly stand out is its depiction of how all-consuming an obsession can be. Fincher expertly pulls the audience into a complex maze of clues and false leads using innovative camera work and editing. By the end of the film – which circles back to its opening moments after a tense two and a half hours – viewers fully understand Robert Graysmith’s relentless drive.

Boyhood (2014)
For twelve years, director Richard Linklater secretly filmed scenes with the same actors – a boy (Ellar Coltrane), his mother (Patricia Arquette), and his sister (Lorelei Linklater) – to document their lives. While some might see this as a self-indulgent project, the result is a fascinating look at American life in the early 2000s, and a deeply moving portrayal of one family’s love, struggles, and sacrifices. Unlike most films, Boyhood has a truly special connection to time. Seeing the actors actually age on screen adds a unique emotional weight to the story. When Patricia Arquette reflects on her life at the end, her words feel especially powerful because they’re informed by a full twelve years of real experiences. As the late film critic Roger Ebert said, movies offer us glimpses beyond our own lives. And Boyhood feels like a movie that opens those windows wider than almost any other.

Whiplash (2014)
Whiplash is a fantastic film that explores the intense dedication and sacrifices artists make for their craft. The movie centers on Miles Teller, who plays a determined young jazz drummer at a top music school. His relationship with a demanding and often cruel instructor drives him to excel, but at a significant personal cost. Director Damien Chazelle subtly reveals the troubling consequences of this pursuit while still delivering a thrilling experience, culminating in what many consider the best scene of the year: a powerful showdown between student and teacher. Surprisingly, Whiplash also works as a truly frightening horror film – the quiet menace of the instructor calmly criticizing a mistake is far more terrifying than anything found in typical horror movies of the decade.

Sing Street (2016)
Just how good is Sing Street? I actually cried while watching it… on a plane! Even on a small airplane screen at 35,000 feet, this inspiring story about Irish teens chasing their music dreams really resonated. It’s filled with witty dialogue, fantastic performances, and a soundtrack that’s even better than La La Land. Sing Street is a genuinely uplifting movie, and we could all use one of those right now. Be warned though – it might make you tear up! (Or really cry – no shame in that.)

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
While bigger isn’t always better, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse remains a standout and arguably the best Spider-Man movie. It features a large team of Spider-People, including the new hero Miles Morales, the determined Gwen Stacy, and a downcast Peter B. Parker. The film powerfully emphasizes the selfless heroism at the heart of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s original vision, beautifully animating their belief that anyone can be a hero.

Roma (2018)
2018 marked a turning point for Netflix’s original films, with the release of critically acclaimed movies like Alfonso Cuarón’s deeply personal Roma, starring Yalitza Aparicio. When it first came out, many people argued that Roma deserved to be seen in a movie theater to fully appreciate its beauty—and it’s true that Cuarón’s stunning black-and-white visuals looked best on a large screen. However, watching it at home offered a more private and comfortable experience, allowing viewers to fully immerse themselves in the emotional story. This highlights one of the benefits of Netflix’s streaming model.

The Irishman (2019)
Frank Sheeran truly stood by Jimmy Hoffa, and that loyalty ultimately defined his life. This is powerfully hinted at throughout Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, a masterful film that feels like the culmination of his career. The movie is at its strongest in its final scenes, as Robert De Niro’s character faces the consequences of a life filled with wrongdoing. Though he seems to take pride in his actions, especially his close relationship with Hoffa (played by Al Pacino), he finally realizes that the power and wealth he gained came at the cost of dying alone. As a priest attempts to offer forgiveness, the film leaves us wondering if it will be enough to redeem him.

Cats (2019)
Let’s be honest, Cats doesn’t compare to the other films on this list. However, to truly understand something amazing, it helps to consider its opposite – and Cats certainly fulfills that role. Even years after its release, the movie continues to raise so many bizarre questions. Why do the cats have human hands? Where are all the humans? What is “hot milk soup”? Why does Jennifer Hudson have a runny nose throughout the entire film? And why does Idris Elba appear almost nude? Plus, why is Taylor Swift wearing heels when all the other cats are barefoot? These questions will likely remain unanswered forever, and that’s part of what makes the movie so strangely captivating.

The Power of the Dog (2021)
Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog is a slow-burn Western that demands your full attention; it’s easy to miss crucial details if you’re distracted. The film offers a compelling look at masculinity and follows Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch), a tough cowboy struggling with change after his brother (Jesse Plemons) introduces his new wife (Kirsten Dunst) and her son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), to life on the ranch. Peter doesn’t seem suited for ranch work, and Phil’s assumptions about him – and our assumptions about Phil – lead to a surprising and impactful conclusion. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait another decade for Campion’s next film.

RRR (2022)
This exciting Indian film is a three-hour thrill ride packed with stunning visuals, a sweeping romance, intense action, and energetic musical numbers. It’s similar to a classic John Woo action movie, but with a South Asian twist, focusing on two powerful men on opposing sides of the law who unexpectedly team up. These men are Bheem, a warrior from the Gond tribe, and Rama, an officer in the British army. Bheem travels to Delhi to find a kidnapped girl, while Rama is tasked with tracking down whoever is searching for her. Instead of becoming enemies, a chance encounter leads to a surprising friendship. Throughout the film, RRR keeps you guessing as you wonder when each man will discover the other’s true identity, all while witnessing incredible rescues – Bheem is often associated with water, and Rama with fire – and watching them cleverly outmaneuver the prejudiced British rulers with their impressive dance skills.

Godzilla Minus One (2023)
Most prequels don’t quite work, but Godzilla Minus One is a brilliant exception. By setting the story in post-World War II Japan, the film powerfully reimagines Godzilla, returning him to his roots as a frightening symbol of atomic devastation and the psychological scars of war. And this Godzilla is truly terrifying – immense in scale, visibly monstrous, and with an atomic breath that feels genuinely threatening.
But Godzilla Minus One isn’t just a visual spectacle. It features a compelling, flawed protagonist (Ryunosuke Kamiki) and explores complex themes related to kamikaze pilots, culminating in a deeply emotional decision. There’s even a section of the film that feels reminiscent of a classic Howard Hawks movie, with a crew of tough sailors battling a gigantic, nuclear-powered dinosaur – and it’s as amazing as that sounds.

Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret. (2023)
While Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret didn’t make a splash at the box office, it feels destined to become a defining movie for today’s young people, much like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was for my generation. This excellent adaptation of the classic book comes from writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig and boasts a fantastic cast, including Rachel McAdams, Benny Safdie, and Kathy Bates. Abby Ryder Fortson, who was great in the Ant-Man films, is also wonderful as Margaret. As a father of two daughters, I’m not looking forward to navigating these issues with them in a few years, but I’m glad this movie will be here for them when the time comes.
