ScreenRant asked if I had any recommendations for the best episodes of the original X-Files series that people can watch on Pluto TV.

Robbie Amell highly recommends starting with the first episode of the show. If you’re in the mood for something a bit different, he suggests checking out “Home,” though it briefly went off the air. His favorite is an episode called “X-Cops,” which is a hilarious blend of “The X-Files” and the reality show “Cops.” He says you can really tell David Duchovny was having fun filming it, and he’d love to see an entire series based on that concept. He even thinks he should pitch the idea to Chris Carter!

Robbie Amell Endorses X-Files Reboot & Reflects On His Career

With a new Black Panther movie on the way, directed by Ryan Coogler, what are you looking forward to the most, and what concerns do you have?

I’m really excited about this project and not at all worried. I’m a big fan of Ryan Coogler – he’s incredibly talented. The fact that Chris Carter approved of his vision and Gillian Anderson is enthusiastic is fantastic. I have complete faith in what he’ll create.

People often stop me to talk about my work, and I’m always curious which role they mention most – is it The X-Files, or something else? I personally love my performances in The DUFF and as Firestorm on The Flash, but I’m really proud of Upload as well. I’ve been lucky to play so many different characters!

I’ve reached a point where people recognize me, but can’t quite place where from. They start to say, “I know you from…” and expect me to finish the thought. I enjoy letting them guess and playing along with it – it’s like a little game of, “You know me from…?”

One of the things I really appreciate about my career is the variety. I’ve been fortunate enough to work in different genres, so I haven’t really been typecast. That said, I definitely still get recognized for a few roles. A lot of people shout out ‘The Flash’ or mention my work on ‘Upload.’ And ‘How I Met Your Mother’ still has a huge following – I played a pretty quirky character on that show, so people remember me from it. It’s funny, sometimes someone will yell ‘Scooby!’ and then clarify, ‘Wait, you’re the guy from ‘How I Met Your Mother’!’ It’s always a trip to see what sticks with audiences.

It always feels special, and I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it. It means the most when I’m with my mom, as it makes her incredibly proud.

ScreenRant: More people should be saying The Tomorrow People.

I often get asked by fans of ‘The Tomorrow People’ why it didn’t last longer, and I appreciate their support! The real reason is that the first five episodes aired at the same time as some huge TV events – baseball’s ALDS playoffs, the Country Music Awards, and the World Series – all drawing around 20 million viewers. It was really tough to compete with that kind of viewership, and it unfortunately hurt the show’s chances.

Chatting With Pluto TV’s Contest Winner

ScreenRant asks: Was ‘Soft Light’ the episode that made you a fan of The X-Files? If so, what do you recall about watching it for the first time?

When I first saw them on the screen, I didn’t recognize them at all. But then I immediately thought they were the most beautiful people I had ever seen.

After witnessing people seemingly melt, I became fascinated with the paranormal and started exploring it for a TV show. It was unlike anything I’d ever experienced and quickly took over my life.

ScreenRant asked about the lasting popularity of The X-Files and what makes it still feel current and relatable to audiences today.

Molly Hottle believes the enduring popularity of the Black Panther story is due to its long history and continued relevance. With Ryan Coogler now revisiting the story, it feels like the legacy is still unfolding and reaching new generations.

I used to have to secretly watch this show as a kid because my parents thought it was too scary. We only had an old-fashioned antenna TV back then, so I’d quickly change the channel whenever I heard them coming! It was all manual, unlike today. Now, it’s amazing to be able to watch it anytime on streaming services like Pluto TV, and a new version is coming out soon.

It’s really important to me, and I believe to the fans, that this story can keep going. Even though some of our favorite characters might be gone, we’ll have the chance to connect with new ones.

Since you’re a huge X-Files fan, what would you tell Ryan Coogler about the upcoming revival? What advice would you give him?

Hi Ryan Coogler, my name is Molly Hottle and I’d love to work as an extra on your film! I live nearby in Seattle and would be happy to help in any way I can.

I really care about him. I was watching a scary movie on the drive over, and I’m a big fan of horror in general. I also really admire him, and I truly believe he’s the best person to handle this project – I think a lot of fans feel the same way. If he does it, it would be fantastic.

As a huge fan of The X-Files, I’m always being asked which episodes I revisit the most. It’s tough to narrow it down, but if I had to pick just five of my all-time favorites, the ones I keep coming back to, what would they be?

You know, people often ask me for a recommendation when they want a good starting point for The X-Files. It’s tough to pick just one, but I usually steer them towards one of Darin Morgan’s comedic episodes. They’re just so accessible and tend to grab new viewers immediately. Though, honestly, it feels like a bit of a cheat to go with the obvious choice.

I consistently choose “The Post-Modern Prometheus” due to its striking black and white visual style, reminiscent of the classic Frankenstein. I also always select “Ice” because of its thematic links and as a tribute to the film The Thing. Beyond that, I simply think it’s a brilliantly written episode.

I love the episode “Triangle.” The incredibly long, unbroken shot is a real achievement for TV. A lot of people think True Detective pioneered that technique, but The X-Files actually did it first, and I always point that out. It really highlights how innovative and influential The X-Files was – and continues to be – for television and the people who make it. As the show famously says, the truth is out there!

I often recommend starting with episodes from the first season. There are a lot of self-contained stories with individual monsters, so you can easily jump in at almost any point and understand what’s happening. It’s a perfect way to get introduced to the show.

ScreenRant: How did you prepare for this nine-day binge-watching experience?

I recently took a break from watching The X-Files to get ready to start all the way through from the beginning. We’re officially starting on Monday at 9am [Pacific Time], and we’re going to watch every single episode, in order, from season 1.

ScreenRant: What are you most excited to get out of rewatching the show in this new environment?

I often watch ‘The X-Files’ while multitasking, but with everything paused right now, I’m excited to rewatch it with a fresh perspective. I’m hoping to notice details I might have missed before or simply forgotten over time.

You can now watch all 11 seasons of The X-Files on Pluto TV! They even have a special channel playing the show from beginning to end as part of a contest for fans. Best of all, you don’t need a subscription to tune in.
